Regular Steams for Independent Travellers
The Regular Steams
Travelling in pairs with a spouse, relative, or a best friend? No worries!, then regular steams is the answer! Madiun is arguably South East Asia’s steamiest place. There are two sugar mills that still use steam locomotives in daily use in Madiun Region, East Java, and these are Purwodadi and Pagottan Sugar Mills. In addition, we will also throw in the tourist steams at Tasikmadu Sugar Mill, located on the neighbouring region of Surakarta, Central Java, just around one and a half hours drive from Madiun.
PURWODADI SUGAR MILL

Located on the vicinity of Madiun Region, this sugar mill features 2 steam locomotives (if you are lucky enough, 3 steam locomotives will be used) all built by Orrenstein & Koppel, Germany, that pulls canes from the truck delivery yard to the inside yard to be queued and ready to be crushed. Field lines may be long gone, but there are still photogenic places located around the mill, such as in both yards, level crossing, and in particular, the bridge just by the mill’s rear entrance.Whether it’s the morning or evening sun, both times still offer you the best photo opportunities.

Due to the small size of the yard on the inside of the mill, a lot of the deliveries are done on the truck crane outside the mill, just across the road from the side of the mill. Cane deliveries might be served by diesels, but on the inside, there are 3 fireless converted Luthermollers found hard at work pushing the canes to the gantry where they are being crushed. At times, the canes being queued are so long that they need 2 Luthermollers to push them towards the gantry, which give you the opportunity to photograph double header pushers. Also, the level crossing in the late afternoon is used as an alternative entertainment for the local villagers, which also give you the opportunity to photograph human interests.
TASIKMADU SUGAR MILL
This mill may have last seen regular cane steams back in 2015, but this mill still has its last gem. Besides from crushing canes, it features an Agrowisata, a tourist theme park which on Sundays, they run 2 steam trains with steam locomotives that produce authentic steams. They run on a huge circuit track each, to which at some points they interloop and cross each other. At times, the two steam tourist trains meet with each other, and one has to stop to give way to another. This offers you the photo opportunities to photograph two tourist steam trains in one frame.
